Kudos on lighting uncharred punkwood. Thought maybe I was the only one that did that. Try cotton wood. :thumb:

I do have one thing to note though. Simply getting a piece of material to accept a spark is only half the battle. Turning that tiny ember into a flame is a whole different game. All too often I have had those tiny embers self extinguish when trying to grow them into something bigger. Not usually with punkwood, but with other tinders. like mullein pith.

A good observation. Mullein pith works for catching a spark but it has a short burn time. Its not the best choice for blowing an ember to flame as you have noted. The same goes for milkweed ovum. There are many wood punks that will carry and extend a coal but are not able to directly catch a spark from flint and steel. So, the solution for using the short burn time tinders is to transfer the tiny mullein or milkweed ember to another coal extender such as those punks, or cattail heads or hoof fungus ( fomes Fomentarious ) or finely pounded cedar bark, etc.
