The muzzle on my CVA 12 guage double measures .720 on both bores.
A true 12 guage without a choke should measure .729 so either the gun has a "Improved Cylinder" choke or perhaps the entire bore is .720?

In any case, I think a patched ball could be shot out of either barrel with some success.

Of course, without good sights it might be hard to get a barrel to shoot a really good group and on a CVA I really doubt that the barrels are both going to shoot to the same point of aim even with a accurate ball/patch combination, I say, tell your friend to give it a try.
The results might be very surprising. :)
 
My cva double at about 40 yards shoots 4-5 inch groups. If I remember correctly the balls cross. The left barrel hits to the right of the point of aim and the right barrel hits to the left. Patched roundballs. Use cva’s load info in the users manual
