your inlays look great!.
what you've done there is about as good as can be done with that type of crack as the flaw will contiueally move open and closed with humidity changes. the only improvement i can think of might be to deeply let in and bed a steel rod in bedding compond under the strap, just to insure some strength to the joint.
i personally hate to see the big plates or wraps of leather on a stock as a repair...that said, we all know that those kinds of repairs were done on working guns and looks didn't mean much to the people that used the guns at the time... what you've done there is tasteful and as inconspicuous as possible. unfortunately, as i mentioned earlier, that particular piece of wood, with that flaw, should have been nixxed as a stock blank in the first place. now you have to deal with what you have...but it looks like you've done as good as can be done!

Finally got a little more done so I thought I'd add some pictures and see what everyone thinks of the work so far. Any thoughts or comments would be welcome. I cut the one piece patchbox buttplate toeplate apart and threw the little toeplate away and added a longer one.

My practice wire eagle inlay (last time I did this was in 1981)

Currently it has three coats of mahogony stain on it so it's getting closer to being finished.

The second eagle on the hawken was easier.

Last post for this topic. I just want to thank everyone that provided their thoughts and ideas for repairing this rifle. Finally finished it up and took it to the range today. It shoots better than I can aim. I only had time for a couple different loads but it seemed to like 45g of ffg. Weather is suppose to be good here for the next week but I need to spend some time casting since I only have a dozen or so .440 left.
