"...I use a flask instead of a snake, but the idea is the same. Take four lbs. of shot in a flask and a full Sikes style powder flask..."
I hear ya...just really don't want to invest in any more specialty accessories that I might only use one or two Labor Day weekends...I don't have easy repeated access to dove hunting several times a year...just hoping to get in on a "pay shoot" over Labor Day weekend and can just use the set of Blue & Gray plastic pocket reloaders I already have...was simply considering coin wrappers as a free disposable alternative to them...

If I may ask, is the Zig Zag 'cigarette paper', and do you load the entire package, or tear and pour?

I use a shot snake and a big horn. The measure hangs from a full sized powder horn. Dump powder in measure. Dump down barrel. Reach in bag for two wads. Ram one wad. Push button on snake and remove end. Dump down barrel and return to snake. Split thin portion off second card for over shot use and ram.
It works good for all small game hunting. I don't use lube at all unless I have to swab the barrel sometime during the shoot.
I made up some cedar tubes to hold the wads if I decide to use them. Reaching in the bag for wads is the same as reaching for the tube to get one out anyway. I quickly abasndoned them as being a waste of time.
A friend closed his shop and sold my my shotsnake for 10$. I never would pay full price for one. I was wrong! A good snake makes using a fowler in the field a lot more enjoyable!

Yes zig-zags are cigarette papers. I recommend the double wides with the glue strip. To load the powder I tear open the package with my teeth and dump the whole thing down the barrel, open end first...SNAP-POOF, all gone!
Hope this helps,
Taylor in Texas

I am with Runner on that. I made a leather shot bag, but it was clumsy to carry and use. The shot snake is quite pleasant to carry and use.

I use a product of my own design that is called the “Pellet Packer”. I developed this for high volume shotgun shooting such as Dove hunts or sporting clays. I originally designed these around steel shot and the use of a plastic shot cup but they also work well with card wads. They are not “PC” or “traditional” and it might be sacrilegious to pour powder and shot out of one into a period correct flintlock fowler. They are very handy for keeping organized in the field or on the range. I have these available on a couple of on-line auction sites. They are also available through T/C and their dealer network. If you would like more info about these either visit my website or send me an email with “Pellet Packer” in the subject line. I will offer special pricing if you id yourself as a forum member.

I'm familiar with them but nothing I'm interested in.
I've got a bag full of Blue & Grey plastic powder/shot carriers...I have 100 7ml plastic blood vials to also use as carriers, plenty of modern things to carry stuff in...going with the paper approach intentionally.

While I'll never be confused with a "purist", it's one more little thing that I can get first hand experience with like they would have done in the old days...thanks

Here's what I will use for a dove shoot.

And for actual upland hunt over dogs.

I'm familiar with them but nothing I'm interested in...and they probably should be discussed in the classifieds section.

I've already got a bag full of Blue & Grey plastic powder/shot carriers made for that purpose...also have 100 new 7ml plastic blood vials I could use as carriers...plenty of modern things to carry stuff in...going with the paper approach intentionally.

While I'll never be confused with a "purist", it's one more little thing that I can get first hand experience with like they would have done in the old days...thanks.

Have 100 powder & 100 shot paper reloaders all prepared, waiting for September to get here
