Febings alcohol based boot black stain will do the same thing as bone black. Dry the stain with heat gun , or hair dryer . Polish the whiskers off with OOOO steel wool. Pick an alcohol srain color desired , repeat the process , dry the wood with heat gun , and apply the finish of choice.. Then , just so you know if asked , read up on bone black , or charcoal.

My best luck with bone black pigment has been mixing a blackish tint into Tru-Oil and applying it in very thin layers with wide flat artist brushes. Letting it dry well then knocking it back with synthetic 3M steel wool and applying another layer until I get the desired effect. I use burnt amber pigment also in conjunction with bone black which adds a whole nother dimension to the look.
