Good Day Y'all,
I have a question about 'Bone Black' and stock coloring. I've never used Bone Black before, and it seems to be gaining popularity. My question is won't any 100% carbon powder do the same job, i.e., hardwood or coconut shells. Has anyone ever tried/tested other carbons on scrap wood? Thanks for your thoughts. Semper Fi.

Yes, I have used fire place soot, black iron oxide, copier toner, and bone black.

We use a lot of very, very, very fine ground coconut shell charcoal powder. This is finer than talcum powder and if given the chance blows around and gets into everything, and can be very difficult to wash off/out of some items. If you would like to try a small sample I can send you some. I can't see why it wouldn't work, but not and expert on muzzleloader gun building.
