I rust blued my first barrel over the past few days. Afer the final carding and clean boiling water the barrel looked great. I decided to use some Boiled linseed oil. This morning it was a pretty gummy mess.
How does one remove it without hurting the finish?

warm it up and wipe it off. When you got all you can off, mineral spirits or isopropyl alcohol to lightly damped a soft pad and wipe gently one way until the goo comes off. Next time try some motor oil.

It puzzles me why the use of linseed oil is used when there are so many good products available for both wood and metal. Is it because it’s thought to be old timey?

Yes, it was sitting on the counter and I could not resist. countless other items including motor oil were there. I have used motor oil after browning.

Butter is not my weakness. Now bacon grease makes everything better and will likely be used on some test scraps of maple later in the day.
From past experience it is a much better than olive oil in Chicken Marsala.
At any rate thanks for the advice as well as the insults. I am getting rather old-timey myself and probably do gravitate towards things of that nature.
