    Shot dipper

In the very informative back pages of my Dixie Gun Works catalog they recommend taking a modern shot-shell case in the same gauge as your muzzleloader and cut it off to a length of one inch. Attach a handle wirh solder or, as I did, with JB Weld. Dixie recommends using the same dipper for both...

Where to find flints in the wild?

Location, location, location is right on. For all practical purposes there's close to none in most of the west. Frankly, it gives me a grin when people say I might run out of caps while they can just "pick up a rock." From pre-Revolutionary days up to the start of the Civil War the settlers...

    Cheap blackpowder kits

Good luck! If you can get this started I'll be a customer unless your defination of "inexpensive" is $600-800 and Up - - mostly UP! I'm retired and just can't cut the prices of most of the stuff being pushed today. I miss CVA! My minor battery of a CVA .50 rifle, a CVA 12 gauge shotgun, an H &...

    Fox River Fifty?

"Traditional ML's are practically valueless here unless they are real sharp looking." Wish I was somewhere you can buy any muzzleloader for $25-$75, even broken ones! The typical well-worn Traditions ML aroung here runs $200 to $300 or even $350. One requiring repair will bring $100 or more...

How Do You Fill Your Powder Measure?

Mudd Turtle, I picked this up off the web somewhere. For me, it has worked out to be pretty accurate: "Nice powder chargers can be made by drilling out an antler tip. Use a drill of 29/64ths (.453") diameter and each quarter-inch (.250") of depth will be very, very close to 10 gr-wgt of...

    poorboy on a budget

That's great! I've got two CVA's, a .50 Bobcat and a 12 gauge single barrel. Both shoot great and I'd like to full-stock them both in poor-boy fashion, then I'd "tacky them up" with brass tacks in Indian fashion. I know, I know! There's no accounting for tastes, is there? I'd only hope I could...

    sea service muskets??

I was just watching a re-run of "The War That Made America" on our local PBS TV channel. This was Episode One. The war was the F & I war, of course. They said that Gen. Braddock's column of mixed British Regulars, American Militia and some Indians also included detachments of British seamen...

Looking for opinions on Traditions Trapper pistol.

A new completed Trapper normally runs a bit under $200 with a kit running a bit under $150. What price is your friend asking for the gun? GrayBear

    finishing a black horn

It's spelled "neatsfoot" oil. It is a leather preservative and helps to soften stiff leather and to waterproof it. The current container I have came from Ace Hardware. GrayBear

    Trade Gun Decoration?

Good tip, Black Hand. That should prevent cracks and splintering from inserting the tacks. Speaking of tacks, is there any site with head sizes or designs or brass aging that will beat the all pretty much same-oh, same-oh upholstery tacks from the hardware and home improvement stores? Thanks...

    Trade Gun Decoration?

Sorry about using the wrong forum and thanks for moving my question instead of deleting it. The replies were great! Just what I've been looking for. Thank you! I also picked up the idea of making a sketch or a pattern before I start driving tacks! GrayBear

    Trade Gun Decoration?

Anyone know of a site or sites where there are pictures of the brass-tack decorated Indian trade guns? I've got a couple of Plain Jane CVA's I want to dress up and need some ideas. Thanks, GrayBear

    Loose rib on SxS

Hard to judge if you don't tell us how much is being asked for the gun. A gunsmith should be consulted but anyone worth his salt won't comment on it without seeing it. Depending on the asking price and the extent of the damage, I might be interested if you aren't. GrayBear

    Wads Pushing Thru Pattern

I've done a lot of shotgun patterning, both ML and Center Fire and I agree with Dave K. about the doughnut pattern when a wad blows through the shot. When I look at that turkey pattern I'd figure the wad punched through after the shot had hit. BTW, that's a very good pattern! WOW! GrayBear

    Wooden Stock For Bobcat

CVA seems to no longer make or service their Traditional line. They haven't even answered my two e-mails. I read where someone bought up their parts but now I can't find my reference I wrote down and I badly need a wooden stock for my wife's Bobcat. Thanks, GrayBear
