    Stock cleaning question

I'd dilute the Murphys 50/50 with water first and try it that way to make sure it doesn't darken things any. For my Military, oil-finished centerfire stocks, I really like to use Formbys Lemon Oil Treatment. It cleans really well, doesn't cause any discoloring, adds some moisture back into...

First report on the New Army revolver.

I have a brass-framed 1858clone too. When shooting the 3fg 777 powder, I've notice it compresses more than black which is part of the reason you're seeing the gap you are. I've gone to using 2 standard lubed wads or a double thick wad I make myself between the powder & ball..........this helps...

    Chainfires! Powder Related??

In 3 years (at least 300 shots) I've had no chainfires or close calls with my 1858 clone. I've shot Pyro P Pellets, Goex Black, 777, Clear Shot, Clean Shot, and Black Mag 3. I use lubed wads 100% of the time and grease patch over the ball too over 75% of the time. For ignition, I've used CCI...

    Knight's Solvent?

I've used the solvent-soaked patches Knight sells and it does a good job at cutting any type of fouling - Black, Pyro, 777, Black Mag 3, CleanShot/American Pioneer.....you name it. I'm not sure it's water-based, but my guess is that it is - since it doesn't cause any issues with the use of any...

    simple green as bore cleaner

I've been using a 50/50 mix of Simple Green & water for over 3 years. It does a nice job of cleaning and has cause NO trouble to any part of a gun whatsoever. :front:

    American P P

I shot APP's predesessor, Clean Shot, for over a year and as far as velocity goes, I found that it took 10gr more powder than Pyro RS for a given bullet to hit the same point of impact. SO, that would make it about 10% less powerful than Pyro or 2fg black and about 25% less powerful than 777...

Replacing front sights on a cap & ball

Recently I broke off the front sight on my Pietta 1858 Rem clone. I've gotten a replacement from VTI and now the question is.................how do I get out the remainder of the old front sight and press the new one in?? Any gunsmithing tips would be appreciated.

    Powder Shelf Life?

Well, I'm working on over 2 years with a bottle of 3fg Goex...............and all is well with it.

Ballistol - What is it and does it work?

Like Lockjaw, I had a SEVERE rust problem with Ballistol as a preservative. I bought some and used it on every gun I owned one Saturday after a trip to the range. The following Saturday, every gun I owned had rust in the bore - ruined an air rifle match for my son. :boohoo: (Fortunately all...

Nice shooting................and what a GORGEOUS rifle. :redthumb:

    American Pioneer Powder Velocity

When I've shot APP or CleanShot in the past...........I found that I needed about 10gr more to equal a Pyro RS load as far as accuracy and point of impact was concerned.

    Adjusting Cap & Ball sight??

I have a Pietta 1858Rem that consistently shoots about 1.5 to 2" left of center at 10 yds - no matter what powder or what charge is used. I've filed the rear sight as much as possible and this is the best I get. Anyone know how to tweak the front site over to the left enough to straighten this...

    triple seven

That's not surprising. 777 is about 15% more powerful than Pyro. 777 burns hot enough that a charge that's just a little too hot will nuke a ball patch and ruin accuracy. So drop the 777 charge down to 12gr and see if your groups improve. Also, were you shooting 3fg 777 or 2fg?? That could...

Found! Proper Felt to Make Wads!

I found the Duro-Felt website last year while searching for a felt source. So far I too am very pleased with their product - definitely worth ordering!! BTW I have tried the 385gr Hornady hollowbase GreatPlains conicals out of my Knight both with & without lubed wads and found no...

What is safe to hunt with a 1858 Remington

cayugad..... It was indeed the Buffalo Bullet conicals that I used. They shoot as good as .454" ball out of my 1858.........although the full 30gr powder load is probably on the hot side for that brass frame - I only use it for hunting something that big.

What is safe to hunt with a 1858 Remington

I do agree with leaving the larger game for rifles........for the benefit of making humane kills. But these Cap & Balls can be very deadly. Three years ago my son took a 125lb boar with my Pietta 1858. Using 180gr conical with 30gr of 3fg Goex, he punched a hole right thru his shoulder/chest...

    Clenzoil

Can't say I'm not impressed specifically with Clenzoil - I haven't gotten around to trying any (yet). :) But in general, they tend not to be the best cleaners ......... and for black powder use, natural cleaning products are usually the best anyway. But I sure have no problem with a CLP like...
