    Unusual two piece lock, flintlock

I picked up this lock at a gun show yesterday. It doesn’t appear to have ever been used and the only marks on it are the numbers 19 on each half. The cock is one one piece and the frizzen is on another. It has a military feel to it due to the heavy nature. It is 7 3/4” long. Any know what it is?

    Vintage leather shot bag

I picked this up at an antique store a couple of days ago. Do I try to restore it or use the spout to make a new one? The leather around the spout area is somewhat brittle and the stitching on the bag is shot. It was machine sewn. Suggestions? It throws 1 and 1 1/4 ounces. The maker is AM...

    Half stock perdussion

I picked this up today for very little along with a 12 gauge with a snider conversion the breech plug was loose and easy to pull and there is still rifling with some pitting but I have not attempted to clean it up yet. No markings on it and it is missing the lock.

    Chips around butt plate

I have a Navy Arms 12g. SxS with small chips around the top of the butt plate. How would you repair these to make them less noticeable? Would you use something like Acraglass, either gel or liquid or wood glue with sawdust? I can remove the plate and sand underneath it for a match. Also I’m...

    Navy Arms Double Full Chokes.

I recently purchased a Navy Arms 12 gauge double and both barrels measured.672” at the muzzle. I’m guessing it is a Turkey and Trap barrel but the chokes aren’t marked. The underside is marked 12 ga. and 18.3. Running a mop or brush down the barrels starts tight and loosens after the first...

    Dried Beef

I bought some roast a few days ago and instead of doing my usual and making jerky I decided to try my hand at dried beef. I have about 5 lbs in the refrigerator being cured right now. I found a recipe using Tender Quick and am giving it a go. Have any of you done dried beef or venison and if so...

Easiest, effective way to clean revolvers

Today I cleaned my new to me Pietta 1858 and an extra cylinder. It got me to wondering what others do the is effective and relatively easy and quick. After pulling nipples, hot soapy water for the cylinders, nipples etc and it goes on. What do you do?

    Three different 1858 reproductions

I now have three different 1858 Remington reproductions, a Pietta sheriff’s that was recently acquired, a Navy Arms kit gun I put together in the late 1970s and a Euroarms I bought a few years ago. I’ve taken a look at them the last few days and thought I would share some pictures and some...

44 Pietta Remington 36 caliber cylinder?

I ran across a extra cylinder for my 58 Pietta Remington several years ago in the bargain room at Cabelas. When I got home it was a 36 although the box was marker 44. It was sold “no return.” I got it cheap enough that I decided to keep it on the chance I might find a 36 Remington at a bargain...

Left handed purchase makes me Tingle

I hit up a gun show today while visiting my daughter and family. I ran across a left handed 45 caliber Tingle rifle. What do I do now as a righty. It followed me home.

    Squirrel Season Starts

Squirrel season opens in Kansas on June first. I'll be out pestering some bushy tails, but am not overly optimistic with all the cover. Also, in our area we have a lot of water and public lands around the lake where I live have lots of flooding. It should be interesting.

    Dry ball

Okay guys I did it this morning. I was shooting at the local range and had a couple of non-muzzleloading shooters watching me including a new at the range RSO (range safety officer). So while visiting and showing what I was doing I swabbed the bore, grabbed the ticking and a ball, started the...

    48" 3/8 drill bit

Our local Harbor Freight has their 48" long 3/8" wood drill bits on sale this week for $7.99. I just wanted to share. The drill shaft is not real rigid, but I picked one up to chase out a tight ramrod hole in a pre-drill that I am currently working on.

    Kansas Folks

I know several of you are from Kansas by your forum name and several of you I have had private messages from. It might be fun to share where you are from and a little other information as you see fit. I have been shooting muzzleloaders for almost 45 years and started with a flint CVA rifle kit...

    Shillinger Locks

A local online shopping site has a couple of Shillinger "hawken" locks for sale. The poster described them as a cadillac of locks. They appear as new and unused. Anyone have information about these locks. I think the price is $350 for the pair.

    Carl Maute scraper

I was digging through one of the boxes of "merchandise" junk I picked up at the auction a couple of weeks ago. I found a Carl Maute scraper. It is about 6 inches long and an inch wide with 4 replaceable scrapers. They are a series of curved blades for scraping. Have any of you used one or seen...

    bought books at an auction

Two things I want to share. I bought a bunch of books related to muzzle loading at an elderly (older than me) neighbor's household auction today. I didn't even know he had an interest in muzzle loading and the civil war. First, among my treasures I acquired, The Pennsylvania-Kentucky Rifle by...

    Unfinished Hawken kit

Today I received an unfinished Hawken kit with most of the parts and a set of blue prints for a Hawken that was at the Nebraska State Historical Society Museum. A friend gave it to me. He had received it as an unfinished project a number of years ago and had not worked on it. He passed it on to...
