    Your first muzzleloader?

I was about 14 years old, my parents bought me a T/C Englander I believe. It had the round barrel and was 50 cal. It was lost in a house fire. My next "first" muzzleloader was a T/C Renegade, also in 50 cal. Due to negligence and inexperience, I ruined the barrel but recently had it rebored to...

    62 cal buckshot load

I killed a deer once with my 12 gauge double using 1 oz of 2F black powder by volume, topped with 10 00 buck pellets. The range was approximately 25 yards. The gun was choked modified. The deer dropped where she stood with most of the pellets hitting the chest/vital area. Upon further inspection...

    my take on the traditional

Yep Spence. You've pretty much nailed it. I'll also say that in my early days of this hobby, reading your essays was a strong source of encouragement and inspiration. No other type of hunting satisfies me quite like the use of black powder.

    Unfired CVA 12ga SxS

Nice looking gun. I have a couple double barrel Pedersoli's in 12 bore. I have a blast every fall walking the woods chasing squirrels. Something about the feel of a good double gun in your hands just brings a smile to your face.

It's been a long time coming but look out Deer.

Everybody has their own way of doing things. For me personally, I sight my guns in with a clean barrel. I don't want to have to foul the gun and then clear and clean the weapon every evening. I routinely leave my guns loaded for months at a time with no corrosion problems but these guns were...

    Lost my best hunting companion

If you didn't cry Skychief, something would be wrong with you. I cry like a baby everytime I lose one of my four legged friends. There my family and they give me more love and affection and comfort than most of the humans I've known. I know its cold comfort but things get better in time. Hang in...

    a very confusing deer

Mike, I'm sorry to hear about your Dad. It hurts to watch our parents get old and feeble. I lost my Mom this year and my Dad is in poor health. I can empathize with you somewhat. My prayers are with you. Jeff

    Weekend hunt.

Dick, I feel for you. It's very hard to lose an old friend like that. Sadly, the circle of life is always turning. What was once young will someday be old, ourselves included. My philosophy is to enjoy each day I get. Hang in there pard. Jeff

    2015 WV Firearms season

Awesome! Way to go. Sounds like a great hunt and there will be some nice meat garnered from that buck. Jeff

    Hoosier Buck

Dang fine deer. Looks like it has the body of a steer. Jeff

    Last day Deer

Good job staying on the trail and finding that deer. The Gods will smile upon you. Jeff

    Last day Deer

It amazes me how far a deer can go with such a devastating wound! I believe far too many hunters give up and quit tracking and assume they didn't hit the deer or merely "grazed" it. Deer are amazing creatures. I shot a small buck this year with my .54 cal. I hit it with a quartering toward...

    Older Pedersoli Shotgun?

I measured the bores on the shotgun I purchased and they are measuring around 0.710"-0.715". Would this put them in the neighborhood of being choked modified? Jeff

What length barrel do you prefer?

I'm fairly uneducated when it comes to the different styles of smoothbore guns but I believe I would like something along the lines of a traditional English or American fowling piece and not a smooth rifle. I am focusing on a kit from either Chambers or TVM. I would most likely be using the...

    Unethical Hunters???

Even now, after all the years I've been hunting, I still have a bittersweet feeling after making a kill, whether that be a squirrel or a deer. I get absolutely no pleasure out of simply killing something. And if I am going to hunt and kill, I want to do it as humanely and cleanly as possible and...
