    H&A "The Off hand"

I recently bought a H&A "The Off Hand". I need to remove the barrel and, from reading past posts here, it's held in place by a single pin. Despite soaking in Kroil and applying heat to the receiver, this pin won't budge. Is there any specific direction this pin needs to be removed from? I'm...

Anyone use a card/wad under patched ball?

The title says it all. I've recently read of folks using either cards or wads under the patched ball. Does anyone here do this and what benefits do you get from it? Thanks, Tom

    Swiss percussion rifle

I just got this one the other day and still trying to find some info about it. I'm told it's a .52 cal....I haven't measured, yet. Good bore, except it's blocked at the breech with dirt/grime. I have the end of the barrel soaking in Purple Power in the sonicator (nipple removed and more Purple...

    Doc White Double Flinter

Here's a SxS 16 bore flinter Doc made for me. Regulated to shoot patched round balls, too. I got it late in the season and didn't have a chance to hunt with it. I'll let the pics do the talking...

    P-1837 Brunswick deer harvest

This is a pic from last deer season here in NJ. It's a P-1837 Brunswick rifle....2-groove rifling in .70 caliber. I used a .69 patched round ball. The pass-through shot was 30 yards and resulted in a quick, clean kill (and many good meals!)

    Doc White English Sporting Rifle

    1803 Harpers Ferry lock question

I just picked up a replacement Davis lock for my repro 1803 Harpers Ferry flinter. I believe the originals were in the white? I wanted some advise on removing the dull, gray finish.....can I assume varying grades of emory cloth to polish? Thanks, Tom

    Spare parts Bess

I had an 1801 East India Company lock, original Bess barrel, and stock from an original unmarked musket (with no lock) hanging around, so I decided to put them all together and make my own "Afghan special" India pattern Bess. It required some inletting of the barrel/tang and lock, but came...

    First long rifle......

A recent stop to Dixon's Muzzleloader Shop yeilded this.....a Mark Silver Virgina rifle assembled from a Jim Chamber's kit by a local gun builder. .58 caliber. I like how he left the metal in the white to naturally brown. Even though the touch-hole is a little high, he says that this one is a...

    Double Flinter

I just sent a down payment for a Doc White 16 gauge SxS flintlock fowler. My first custom gun. I'll be posting picks...in like 6-9 months! Tom

    Load For 1803 Harpers Ferry?

I contacted Navy Arms about loads for the .58 1803 I have, but they just told me they don't make that rifle any more...gee thanks...any way, I'm looking for a starting load and eventually a hunting load. I'll be using patch/ball. Thanks! Tom

    JT Phillips, Greenbrier, Arkansas?

Has anyone heard of this gun maker? I've purchased a gun he made (used) and haven't been able to find any info. I'd just be curious to learn some history behind the gun and the person that made it. Thanks, Tom

Has my frizzen given up the ghost?

How can I tell if my frizzen is shot? This is a used rifle, so I can't do a before and after comparison. It's also my first flintlock. The frizzen has wear marks in the metal, itself. There isn't much spark at all, but I'm not sure how much there is supossed to be, really. When frizzens are shot...

    FF or FFF?

I bought a Navy Arms Harpers Ferry 1803 in .58 caliber. My initial thought was to used FF, but I read of another gent who has the same rifle that uses FFF. I know that the FFF is faster burning and will result in greater pressures. What benefit would using FFF give me as oppossed to FF? Thanks, Tom

    .58 ball or mini?

I'm sure it's a matter of what shoots best out of the gun. I plan to use the Navy Arms Harpers Ferry for whitetails here in NJ. I've hunted for years with a TC .50 using Hornady Great Plains bullets with good success. I'm new to the .58, so just wanted to get some general opinions. I'm sure it...

    Double flint folwer

Does anyone know if a double flint fowler might be available in kit form somewhere? If not, then does anyone know who makes them? I'm asking rather than wading through the dozens of links (I've already been through a bunch). Also, I'd rather not have to put a second mortgage on my house to buy...

    Flint size

First post, so be gentle. I just bought my first flintlock, a Navy Arms Harpers Ferry 1803. I'd like to get some flints for it, but I'm not sure how they're measured. I hate to assume, so I ask...even for the most basic of info. Also, what flints do the vets recommend?
