Henry Mauger

Hello, I have a maple blank and want to create a mauger rifle from it. There was a gentleman at a woods walk who had one and after I shouldered it decided that is the direction to take. I'm looking for a pattern and any pointers from folks who have been there. Thanks so much, Bill

I don’t know of a pattern that’s available, but I think Jim Whisker wrote an article about Mauger in Muzzle Blasts recently… which for me and my “old guy” memory might mean any time within the past 5 years or so. I don’t save every issue of the magazine, but I’ll look through the ones I have and see if I can find the article, if you think the information will help.

Dr. Whisker’s articles tend to be mostly about the gunsmith, with a few incidental photos of firearms that were built by the subject. However, you might get some ideas from the photos.

Finding a generic pattern for that style of rifle doesn't mean you will be duplicating the rifle you shot. I would be asking that gentleman who had the rifle if I could make a pattern from his rifle. too many variables. What was the LOP, what was the drop on the stock, Where was the balance point, what barrel did he use? that can affect the weight and balance point. did the rifle have cast off? If your trying to duplicate that rifle then you need all that info from that rifle.

However, I did find that Knob Mountain Muzzleloading offers a Reading/Mauger styled precarved stock, if you are interested. Third from the top in the right-hand column on this page. They also have high-quality castings of longrifle mountings, including some from the Reading area. Might be worth browsing around on their website.

I have reached out to the guy who has the rifle and will get with him soon. The pictures are very helpful and I will be looking at that site as I still need most all the small parts. His rifle had no cast and I am going to draw it out, tweak it with his and then hopefully fit it personally to me as I whittle it out. I've done 2 blanks, both were ok and I'd like to get one more at least before the arthritis takes my paws. Thanks very much fellas, Bill
