Graver and hammer, Most use 90deg square, or round.
Not best to start on your barrel. Practice plates first.

Do it on a practice plate 3x a day for a week. Cursive script is easier than lettering. After a week, decide if that will look good. If you’re starting from zero, no graver, no lessons, never sharpened a graver, you may or may not get a result that pleases you.

Rich gives sound advice as usual. On the other hand I read a book (pre internet) and made this tool and hacked my name onto the barrel of my first scratch build. It isn’t art but ’m going to leave it.
