you'd be surprised how much lead is in the mountains near old shooting spots.. stuff is plentyfull and easy to get.. metal detecting is not difficult
 
ask around the local boat yards in your marina or ports, NAVY has lots of it at gov auctions. mostly used for balast on ships.

wonder how much lead is in the keel of some sailboats?
Watched a YouTube video couple months ago, they attached a 8400# keel to the sailboat they were remaking
