There's a well known gun writer who used to shoot and write about traditional side locks and sounded like one of us. Then some years back he starting writing about how traditional round ball rifles were unreliable, and were pretty ineffective on game larger than a sick squirrel. He only touts the "unmentionable", sabot shooting, scoped thingies. So I guess we are only fooling ourselves thinking we could even seriously wound a game animal - assuming one could get these old guns to fire which apparently is highly unlikely - with any size lead ball powered by black powder. It appears my 55 years of killing deer (and other critters) was just a hallucination.

As I recall, that guys yearly earnings went up drastically when he changed his tune so it only thinks the unmentionables here were better.
Seems like the folks who sell those things have a lot of money available for writers who sing only their songs.

Oh I know of who you speak. Was quite amused one day, long ago, when he went into a little speech about how the traditional rifles were "neat", but that you just could not depend on them. Just weren't reliable. That was the last time I watched.

Please fellows. Only accuracy from a ML counts to hit the deer where aimed. No modern gun will do better. Forget the inlines and fancy smansy bullets. A RB that hits is deadly no matter the charge.

It's just like everything else in this world. Follow the money.

70 grains Goex 3f pushing Patched round ball. 50 yards 3 inch group. best my poor eyes can see. lol I am sure it will be minute of deer! Thanks for all help. I ordered a 45 cal cleaning kit from Track of Wolf.

Unless I missed it, get a good range rod for working up loads and pulling balls. The ramrod under your barrel is ok for field use, but sucks when you are shooting a lot.
Personally, I like 3f more than 2f. Dan

range rod, .50cal M2 cleaning rod (ebay finds) 4 sections will work for any length barrel !
get the brass fitting at any hardware store. 20171016_173110.jpg 20171016_173139.jpg
