Finally made it to the woods today. Entered the woods about sun-up and 15 minutes later spotted my first squirrel. He was coming down a large cypress tree about 20 yards away. After the smoke cleared the squirrel was gone. I found him dead in a cluster of cypress knees at the base of the tree.
Hunting squirrels in the swamp I have to be a lot more patient than hunting in dryer woods. I have passed up good shots at squirrels if they were in trees in deep water. Dead squirrels sink and are hard to retrieve in black water. An hour later I got another gray and called it a day. It warmed up quick and so did the mosquitoes. Anyhow I had a blast.

I had a similar adventure years ago while out after turkey. It had rained the night before and conditions were a little "drippy". But an outraged squirrel found he couldn't get rid of me by coming down the trunk of the tree I was leaning against and scolding just inches above my head.

Since that didn't work he got on a very leafy limb and commenced to shake water down on me as well as occasionally scolding. This guy continued for more than an hour and got me soaked. I finally left and said "I yield" to him.

glad I'm not the only one terrorized by an insane squirrel! :haha:  :rotf:
