    T/C Maxi-Balls

The store bought TC Maxis I have used load fairly easily while ones you can cast are tight without sizing. How did they shoot? being loose and all you may want to patch behind the MB with a wad to prevent blow-by and send your MB a bit further.

    .50 roundball loads

Thanks for the info. Can you tell me a bit more about why you use 3f vs. 2f? I have both and use the 3f for my pistol.

    .50 roundball loads

I have been testing different loads with roundballs in my .50 hawken. I am using pyrodex and like 50gr. The kick does not raise the barrel at all. I am interested in what others like to use. I want to be able to hit a deer at 50-100yards.

    Casting : Roundball Sprue

What do you recommend doing with the sprue or small tag on the roundball that remains after removing from the mold? file it down ? I have heard alot of people say to place it on the top when loading.

Casting Bullets - wrinkles in cast bullets

I cleaned the mold, used a candle on it and let my lead sit for another 15mins after it was melted. The I preheated the mold, the first 5 I cast I put back in the pot to get my mold hot. All minnies cast after this were perfect.

Casting Bullets - wrinkles in cast bullets

I just ran about 30 through the lee improved minnie mold I got this week - as the mold got hotter the looked better. They were all keepers. Thanks for the advice.

    Minie Ball - using wads?

I assume you were not able to recover the minnie ball? did you ever recover one in a deer you shot? I imagine they pack a punch and flatten out real nice.

    Minie Ball - using wads?

What type of distance were you able to get good groups with the minie? 100+? how tight of groups?

Casting Bullets - wrinkles in cast bullets

Thank you for all of your input, it is appreciated. I am using a production pot so it does heat to the right temperature. I will use all your recommendations and let you know how it works. You all are the best!

Casting Bullets - wrinkles in cast bullets

I just cast some LEE minnie balls and the bullets seem to have wrinkles on the sides. Perhaps I need to preheat the mold more prior to casting?

    Minie Ball - using wads?

Thank you for the response. I just cast a few in my LEE improved minnie mold for my .50 Hawken and sent one down range. They load so nice, my home cast maxi-balls were always too big and alot of sizing and pounding was required to get them in the barrel.

    Minie Ball - using wads?

Has anyone ever used a wad behind a minie ball for the same reasons they are used with Maxi-balls? To prevent blow-by? I understand the Minies tail skirt is to expand into the rifling.

    TC Maxi-Ball Lube

My last thought on this - the front ring of the bullet is what actually gets engraved from the rifling as I understand while the back 2 rings fit somewhat lose. Why is the lube behind the ring that will encounter all the friction? unless it gets blown in front of it.

    Lee Modern Target Design Minie

I read where wad-cutter type bullets look great on the target due to a clean hole they make - but are not ideal out past 40-50 yards.

    Lee Modern Target Design Minie

How accurate is the improved minnie for you? I am interested in how far out you feel it is accurate for deer? what groups you get AND do you use straight lead when you cast them? any info appreciated.
