    engraving

:hmm: The best source I can suggest is the book "The Art of Engraving" by James B. Meeks. It available from Track of the Wolf. I found my copy on E-bay. I saved about $10.00 over the TOTW price. It will tell you everything you need to now to get started. :v Good luck!

    How hot

You can get the Lee pots on e-bay fairley cheap, or from Cabela's or Sportsmans Wherehouse for around $70.00. You do not need the high dollart pots. The inexpensive Lee pots work really well, and they have a two year warrantee. I have had mine for three years, and have melted appx 200 pounds of...

    Nipple "really" frozen!

Try PB Blaster. It is available at Wal-Mart and Auto Parts stores. Just follow the instructions on the can. We have used it numerous times, and always seems to work.

New Finish on My .54 Virginia Flinter

I just finished stripping and refinishing my .50 Caliber Virgina. The original finish was to light for my liking. The darker color brings out more of the curl. I spent about 10 hours stripping off the 10 coats of Tru Oil and stain. I then applied a fresh mix of Chromium Trioxide and let it set...

    Re-Model

Thanks for the info. I think I am going to try it. I already have 250 hours in the build and finish, so I guess another 20 to 30 will not hurt. I can handle the tedious stuff!

    Re-Model

 Great job on the re-finish. IMHO The darker looks 100% better. And that patch box is the bomb. Great job on the engraving. How did you remove the old finish? I have a Virginia that I built last year, and it is a little blonde for my taste. I would like to re-finish mine with...

    cleaning full stock flintlock

 Shortstring, I like your timing method. My only question, are you timing that with a 12 oz. can or a 40 oz. bottle :hmm:

    Suggestions on round ball size

Suggestions are just that, suggestions, and should be taken with a grain of salt. Each gun is different, and each has it's own optimum load. Working up that load/patch/ball combination is half the fun of shooting. I do not like a combination that you have to drive in with a hammer, but thats...

    Unknown Riflemaker?

:hmm: I don't know who the maker or makers are, but I can tell by closer examination that they are in fact two different rifles. Look at the engraving on the barrel and type of side plates. One has engraving on the flats, and one has engraving with gold inlay. One has a Brass Side plate, and the...

    Mink Oil

Yes, it is made by the same people, but comes in a little 2 oz bottle. You can get it from www.lucasoil.com It has a red color to it simular to the color of Transmission fluid. Super slick and it works good. SO FAR! LOL

    Mink Oil

Maybe I just don't quite understand the whole muzzleloader/rondezvous/reenactor thing. I have been going to rondezvous for about 3 years now, and have attended 13 around the state of Mossouri and Illinois. I have seen a lot of really nice PC rifles and pistols. I have even built one myself. I...

    Curly Maple Highlighting

You can use Chromium Trioxide. You can get it from Dixie Gun Works. Small bottle will do three to four Stocks. Make sure to follow the directions, or your stock will be really dark.

    French Hawk?

:v We have a few people in our camp that use the french hawk. My 13 year old Daughter prefers the French Hawk to the Traditional hawk. She is really quite good with it. Splitting cards is becoming quite common-place for her. She really gives me a run for my money!

    Patchbox or not?

:v I love the look of the sliding wooden patch box. Here is a pic of the one I made , and notice the curl runs the same direction on both the Patchbox cover and the stock. I just cut the cover out of the same wood, and aligned the curl before I did the final shaping. I kind of wish I would have...
