What Muzzleloading Stuff Did You Do Today?

Yesterday the Boss lady and I took a nice 60 mile drive to day trip Rain De Voos in Littlerock Wa, left the guns at home as I had no plans of doing the trail walk in the rain ( which at times was dumping ) we sat in the warm barn slurping coffee and such with lots of other folks and had a nice jaw fest with old friends, got to see some of the winter projects folks completed and catch up doins! just what the doctor ordered to help curb cabin fever!

Blued my first gun barrel/parts today and antiqued the brass. Might work on the brass a bit more with steel wool. This is the barrel for my 58 Kibler Colonial. I'm really pleased with how it turned out.

Had a fantastic day with the Yadkin Valley Longrifles at our monthly shoot yesterday. We had about 18 shooters, several first-time guests. I have shot better, but cant say that I have had many more enjoyable days than this one!
At the end of the rifle match, several guys did a follow-up pistol shoot. My good buddy Charles was on fire with that .45 flintlock! Highest score I would say. I didn't do too badly with my .50 smoothbore flintlock as well.

I went to a Blackpowder trade fair at Holden, Mo. yesterday!! Picked up some copper goodies and a new to me skillet!

Not today, but yesterday, went about 100 miles NW with friends to do a practice run for the spring TMLRA shoot. It was upper 20s and 15-18 mph winds gusting to 35, quite a time. I shot three relays with the SMR, 30 rounds offhand, spit patch, cut at the muzzle because of wearing knit gloves and cut patches departing the premises instantly if not in a closed container. My new range box worked great, quite pleased with the function, how much it holds, and how portable it is even when loaded up with five pounds of powder, three calibers of balls, containers of shot and corn meal, cleaning and patch lubes, oil, tools, extra flints, tape, and sundries.

Tinkering with my CVA Hawken trigger. It was so light just placing a finger on it and it would drop the hammer. It now is at 10.5 ounces. I just can't seem to get it to were I like my triggers at around 2 lbs. No matter how I fiddled with it.

polished and fire blued some screws. dug around in the excess ram rod stash and found one that fits the Cherry build. it has brass ends so i blackened them as there is no other brass on the gun. stained the rod with the LMF cherry stain. was going to cut dove tails but cant find my raised dove tail chisel .
maybe i will go ahead and file the dovetails. after a nap.

I went to the Fort Umpqua Frontier Heritage Fair yesterday. They had approximately 30 booths set up displaying and or selling guns, supplies, blacksmith items, horns, furs and educational displays. I posted a few photos in the Public Events section "heritage Fair" Eugene Oregon.

I attended the First Santa Fe Trail Plainsmen's monthly shoot today, and took my fusil de chasse out. Weather was exceptionally good for February with temperatures in the 50s, and a light breeze hardly enough to make shooting more of a guessing game.

I spent hours filing on a SMR buttstock trying to get the butt plate to fit. Tweaked it a bit, and thought I had it good enough. Drilled pilot holes for the top screws. Didn’t have a bit big enough, just too big. Instead of waiting, drilled a 1/16th hole and waxed the screw. Went in tight but went in, till it broke. Now I have a broken screw that I can’t get out:-( I plan on drilling it out and plugging it. Any other tips or suggestions?
My lack of patience gets me some times.

Nitric acid maybe. Never actually tried it but have dissolved broken steel manifold bolts out of aluminum cylinder heads with potassium alum before.

best bet is to get a hole saw long enough to reach the bottom of the screw. saw needs to be just a smidge bigger than the screw. drill/saw it, then snap the column of wood and screw off with side pressure. fill hole with dowl and proceed.
next time with an oversized screw, screw it in half way, back it out. screw it in another half turn and back it out. lube it with candle wax and add another half turn. repeat until it is in.

Monthly club shoot and meeting today. It was our club's annual 'soup shoot' and took a pot to share.

Also made a deal to buy another Plains pistol in .54

Today , my neighbor and I finished up bluing the barrel hardware , and lock , on the TC rifle , they found sticking barrel down in a giant tash dump. Stock finish is drying , and three more coats of paste polyurithane finish , a coat of furnature wax , and to the range to sight in the new Colerain ,50 cal. barrel.
