[Hatchet-Jack]

Quick update. I made a mock up patch box. I wanted to practice this before attempting it on the gun. This can be sawed up the middle and turned in to a tool to hold the lid while shaping and carving it.

It was time to get serious so I started laying out the lines on the stock.

After redrawing the layout several times I was finally satisfied.

Here we go...

Whew! Good I didn't mess it up!

I started removing some wood...

Well that's a start. Next I need to take it down to the bottom of where the dove tail will go then I can fit the lid.

It was driving me crazy not being able to know what wood to remove in order to get a nice fit for the lid. I searched my books and found a mention of "Use carbon paper" next to an illustration in the "Recreating The American Long Rifle" book. There's no mention of how to use it, so I thought hmmm let me try something. Sure enough it works like a charm and it's not messy.

Pretty neat idea. One way I was taught was to use a graphite pencil. Rub the edges and slide in the lid, it will transfer to the stock where it makes contact. Just another idea. Project is looking very nice!!
