Poll: Will the closing of Goex dissuade you from buying a Flintlock?

It’s not us that have several flinters us that have been shooting for years. Us that have some or more powder on hand plus flints and lead That are not going to buy guns. It’s the new guys. Don’t know exactly what is needed or where to get it and how to use it that will say it’s to much trouble to deal with cause they are not addicted to it in all ways we are. thats what’s possibly going to bite this hobby the hardest

This is a simple yes/no/unsure poll; With the closing down of the Goex Black Powder plant dissuade you (choose against) buying a Flintlock rifle or pistol?

Nope. I will keep and use BP for the flinter and use pyrodex in the caplocks.

I’m either headed to PA or DE once my kids are out of school. The state has changed so much for the worse in the last 20 years between taxes and local politics.

and its a shame all these years here, NJ is ground zero for the American Revolution. From Cape May NJ to the very North, there are Markers everywhere from the daughters of the American Revolution.

All you guys from NJ need to take back your state,change laws with in that state,boot out the crooked politicians!!!

No, not at all in fact I just bought another smoothbore Northwest style "Trade Gun". Ever since I first got into this hobby I mostly shot Swiss anyway. I have never been able to walk into a store and buy BP, always had to order online so nothing has really changed for me in that regard. Very sorry to see the last American manufacturer close of course and hope that some other American firm might yet be smart enough to buy Goex but I sure ain't ready to walk away from such a great hobby because of them closing either!

I just bought my first two flinlocks. A Pederssoli Brown bess carbine kit .75 calibre smooth bore, and a Pedersoli .50 calibre Pennsylvania rifle kit. Ive got lots of Muskets but flinters are new to me. I'm impresseed with the Quality of these kits.
I have black powder at present, and I hope it dosn't take too long to come back.

I would venture to say that even with Goex closing, we will still continue to have an easier time sourcing gun powder in the twenty-first century than those who relied on these guns in their heyday two centuries ago.

I had a small “toy” steam engine when I was a boy. I think we ran it once, but if it didn’t require parental help, I probably would have ran it many times. Even without running it, it was still very cool. I very much enjoy shooting and hunting, so if I ran low on BP, maybe I’d hunt more with my flintlock and shoot more with my unmentionable, conversely if ammo is short. I have no shortage of hobbies that I enjoy. It’d be fun to have a flintlock around regardless of what hobby I am enjoying at the time. I have no flintlock currently.

Goex closing is depressing to me. Seems just one more nail in the coffin for the shooting sports. I am at a loss to explain all these recent changes, but bad to worse news is coming in faster than this old guy can adjust.

Consider that Goex are professionals and have been making powder for decades. Goex has had fires and explosions at their manufacturing facility that has safeguards and containers that help to keep employees safe in the event of an accident. There have been injuries and deaths associated with accidents at Goex. To me it seems like folly to attempt to do what they do by amateurs. Just my assessment YMMV.

In under a year, 2 at most, I predict we'll hardly recall Goex closing. I have 6 flintlocks, would love a few more.

I do not expect Goex to re-open. If they ever did, it would be a minimum of two years to get up and running and get the licensing, OSHA, and environmental stuff approved.
