Considering that the size of 4fg black powder is from 0.0165" to 0.006" in diameter, my concern with using 4f as a main charge in my flintlock is that the powder would flow through the touch hole and self prime. The flow through the touch hole would result in an inconsistent load in the chamber and would likely adversely effect accuracy.

Prick it first.

i love it when 4f is brought up. one would think that the world has come apart when 4f is brought up. i like reading all the replys. one can separate those with opinions and those with facts fast. it makes for interesting reading. the one who made the post will be more confused than ever if this one keeps going. let err rip every one. one said something every true to facts. makes a good garden fertilizer. but why waste it their.

My advice is to stop asking for advice from the "hold my beer and watch this" crowd and follow the manufacturer's recommendations. The pressure developed and burn rate are not linear.

Some people have no regard for life or limb, they are fearless. They are also dangerous.
Choose your mentors wisely, after all you are playing with guns and explosives.

Enough of the fear mongering BS. People are getting tired of it.

As well as the attempts to demean people who disagree with you.

An all too familiar tune,

I have a hard time wrapping my head around some of the arguments.
I have a hard time understanding why anyone who doesn't "believe" the manufacturers recommendations would even use their product at all.
I guess that's the thing about believing, it's selective. We all believe what we want to.

Are you advocating the the manufacturer recommendations shouldn't be considered ?
I think that kind of irresponsibility does a great disservice to new shooters and to the sport in general.

A disservice would be a case where upon damaged to property and or to a peeson or others solely from the use of 4f.
Please present your evidence of such.

Nor is it a blanket approval.
And which was I doing ?
Keep in mind Britt that we have established a difference in U.S. vs European grading.
If it is not either approval or condemnation from a manufacturer you sir have no more right to imply that I (and others) are beer drinking fools than I could imply that you need to grow a set!
Considering you can provide zero evidence of catastrophic failure from the use of using 4f I see no point in discussing this topic with you any more and thus am ignoring your contributions from now.

All joking aside, why not mix it 50/50 with 3F if you're worried about it and work up a load. I did this with 2 and 3 F one day when I was running low on powder and really liked it. It poured easier out of my powder flask valve (a cheap plastic one) and i inadvertently discovered an amount that my .54 loves.
There. I have no more Fs to give.

It's familiar alright.
You attack and criticize me openly where you have an audience to support you, but you are afraid to have a one-on-one dialog with me without your comrades to back you up. The familiar trait of a bully alright.

Would you like a link to a whole forum that disagrees with you?

I have about 3/4 of a pound of 4F in storage I have had for forty years. It was purchased years ago for use in a flintlock pan and I just never used much of it. If I had another pound I'd keep it for use in a .31 pistol if I ever bought one or maybe I should try it in my .32 squirrel rifle. 15-20 grains would be just about right for 30 yards or less on squirrel. At least BP won't go bad in storage.
