I would think having the hammer off the nipple while reloading would allow powder to flow into the flash channel along with using a magnum cap would take care of misfires. At least it has always worked with my side locks.

My caplocks shoot just fine as is. I can't remember ever having a missfire with one except once I dry balled. Never had a missfire with a flint gun either, but I haven't had the extent of firing them as I've had with a cap.

I agree with Carbon 6, that I have never experienced any back pressure either, and that any air should escape through the nipple. The ONLY times I've had an ignition problem is: 1. I forgot the powder . 2. a faulty cap 3. I didn't have the cap fully seated.
I certainly would not recommend to anyone to drill a hole in their combustion chamber, unless you don't like them...

No, That is for a Scope mount that TC once made

Then what is it for ?????????
Emphatically

8 Bore, if you are referring to the machine screw on top of the tang on a T/C breech, then it is there to provide a location for a scope mount.

If it is the hole on the barrel opposite the touch hole on a T/C Seneca, then it is the manufacturing access to drill the touch hole and it is permanently blocked off.

Both were covered in previous answers to the original question.

been shooting both my percussion tc rifles since the 70's and only once in that entire time did I experience a misfire.
the problem was with the remmington explosive material falling out of the cap when I picked it up and put it on the rifle.
I found the little green material on the bench.

I think I understand what he is saying. When the ball is seated you have:

Nipple <> air gap <> Powder <> Patch <> Ball

The air gap is sealed by the powder/patch/ball on one end and the Nipple on the other.
It is correct to say that a nipple is not truly air tight, however , it will only allow air to flow at so much rate (less than if the hole was open).
Sounds to me that what he is referring to is that the spark coming off the nipple compresses the air in the air gap and restricts the flow of the spark due to the increasing pressure. And that if that pressure was reduced that the travel of the sparks would be faster in the air gap to the powder.

My feeling however is that any gains you get by venting that channel are insignificant and that there are better ways to decrease the time to ignition without introducing variations to what might be described (properly or improperly) as "chamber pressure" as the vent hold builds up crud and thus the amount of venting has variation. Plus, how does that venting of chamber pressure affect the build up of the powder burn and exit time of the ball from the muzzle. Likely since you are venting, you need to then make up SOME amount of lost pressure with more powder or something.

This sounds more like a POSSIBLE way decrease ignition delay.

I however note that since it is not a standard practice by gun manufacturers now adays, it was not likely seen to be beneficial enough to carry forward. Or there was some other reason not to carry it forward.

People wrote articles in the past that had no merit, just like today. It happens. I welcome anyone to experiment and post the results using the scientific method.

Incidentally, all my fails to fire with real BP in a sidelock percussion I can attribute to :
Blocked channel due to improper swabbing between shots (too wet)
Dry ball

My hunting buddies that use/used sidelocks, most of them pulled the nipple and dropped some powder down before hunting. using a cut down 22 case to measure. They sighted their rifle the same way before taking it hunting.

Emphasis mine... you don't want a jet of superheated gasses squirting out of that hole an inch or three from your favorite eyeballs and face.

Thanks for the info nurse roger

I am dyslexic. I am retired from a technical job that required extensive writing. I found that people became very annoyed if I did not do a good job writing. True, I was not in grammar class, but hey, they were not my teacher either. If I did not do my job correctly I was imposing on them to do extra work. They had to correct my writings before they got to the meat and potatoes of the report.

I see it on the net a lot. When folks do not use capitol letters, paragraphs, punctuation, and spell corectly the wrings become very difficult to read. If a person is asking a question is seems to me they should to be courteous enough to ask is in coherent sentences.

A spelling and grammar checker can make fixes easily. Just paste it into MSword, run the checker, and paste it back into the forum.
