Can anyone tell me how wide strips of patch material should be to cut at the muzzle for a .50?

Also, what do you guys carry your pre lubed strips of patch material in?

I am getting bored with cutting little round circles! :surrender:

About a inch and a quarter wide, won't matter if it's too wide, cause you're going to cut it off anyway...

I roll mine up and put it in a little box on the butt of the rifle, what the heck do they call that thing....Oh yea...A PATCH box.... :rotf:

I also have another roll in my bag with in my extra ball bag....

My strips are 1.5" wide, which is probably a little wide, but I use them in my 54 as well as my 50. When I cut, there's always some excess coming off the sides.

I don't prelube the whole strip, though. I keep lube in a tin (actually a Copenhagen can), and swipe the strip across that before seating. A buddy of mine got me in the habit of tying the strip to my bag strap so it dangles nice and handy. Looks funny, but I've looked funny all my life and won't stop now.

Try some squares they are faster to make and you will likely not see any difference in accuracy.

Lakota, I rip my pillow tickin' about 5 stripes wide approx.1-1/4" then roll up and put in my bag & use spit for lube

About 5 stripes wide is about right. I put mine in a 35MM can and that is about what will fill the can. Actually I think I do 4 and 1/2 stripes. Works well.
Fox

I rip mine just wide enough to fit in a film can then lube them and roll them up and drop them in the can and cap them. I also carry a small corked bottle of liquid lube and pre cut square patches in my pouch for when I don't feel like dealing with the mess of the prelubed roles

PATCH BOX????????? I thought that thing was for decoration!

I cut the ticking at about an inch and a half...wider than I need. I soak it in melted Bore Butter or Wonderlube, wring it out and let it dry...I roll it and store it in either a small, lidded glass jar (in my range box) or in a small buckskin pouch in my shooting bag...this way of getting the lube on the patch seems to be a lot less messy than my old way of rubbing lube on the patch material...I'm waiting to see how it works when Summer's heat gets to it...Hank

You want it wide enough so that there will be excess around the bore size after cutting the patch. Also you can cut your patches on your loading block just like cutting them on the muzzle. I do this sometimes while squirrel hunting. Your extra strips of patching can be carried in anything that will keep it from gathering dirt and such. Cutting patches at the muzzle might seem slow but to me shooting mls is time well spent! :hatsoff:

I grease up a strip to fit what gun I am going to use with deer tallow and keep in a deer skin pouch. I carry a bullet board with some ready to use. When I use one replace it. Dilly

Good idea!

I carry a spare block, but spare patched and balls are also rattling around in the bag. Might as well eliminate the spare block.
