I have had for some years a contemporary flintlock smoothbore long gun with the inscription on top flat of octagon barrel "J. Caldwell N.C." No other markings present. I presume J. Caldwell, possibly of North Carolina, crafted this beautiful gun but my research to date on whom he might be has turned up nothing. I'm hoping someone on this forum may have the answer. Thanks.

I have a Caldwell County right below me :hmm: Is it an OLD rifle? Caldwell was formed in 1841. Might be part of Caldwell Family

J. Clemens Caldwell was one of the original members of the Kentucky Rifle Association (KRA) in the late 1960's.

He was still active as a historian, collector and builder in the mid 1980's but living in Kentucky at that time.

I have no further information.

While not positive, if the rifle is "exquisite" there is a fair chance he could be the builder.

Caldwell mentored another noted builder who resided in North Carolina (Earl Lanning) which could provide the NC connection.

J Caldwell is a good friend of mine who lives in NC. He makes rifle and smoothbores with a realistic antique finish. James makes these muzzle loaders up when he feel like it and sells them at local gun shows. I have a couple with this signature on it. James does not have E Mail or the internet just a phone with a chord on it.
