Not sure about the 1858, but on my Colt 1851 by Pietta, CCI #10's work flawlessly and fit tightly.
 
I use #10 Remingtons.

I use Treso nipples, but i'm sure the same caps worked for the stock nipples too.

Treso nipples is a good upgrade for your gun.
 
I bought some stainless steel Pietta nipples and #10's Remington caps and they fit.
