I just picked up a pewter tankard engraved and marked as a shooting trophy for a competition between two groups of what I presume to be British soldiers in December of 1863.. My question is.. What weapon would have been used in this event???.. It matched 11 men on each side,, commanded by a Major Irvine on one side and a Captain Freeman on the other. The winning team scored 347 marks while the other team scored 316 marks.. See image attached. I assume it was shot with M1853 Enfield Rifle Musket but maybe Whitworth, as that was, at the time the most accurate rifle in their hands.. Any thoughts??
Also.. I know than England started completion with Scotland and I think Wales ini 1862 shooting 15 rounds at each of 3 ranges from 910, 1000 and 1100 meters I believe. I envision it being a larger 3 meter square target at those ranges.. with every hit on the board marked as a "mark"..
