Go to holts Norfolk auctions on google, probably biggest gun auction world wide outside USA. 4 auctions a year big section on flintlocks and percussion decent guns you bid on. . Then the sealed bid with more tatty guns. So much information there

Do you have a link to Holts?I wanted to add auctions, rusty guns ,an my unmentionable 577-500 no2. Well it is BP !
I wanted a double but prices were beyond me. I was viewing holts uk auction lots and came across a rusty double by Thomas Bland with thick white paint over the wood a couple of loose hammers hung on string nobody was looking at it , but being poor I looked and looked, the action was very tight hammers fitted the lock and the riffling as new bright and shiny . Most of all it was on the obsolete list no police permit needed to buy . I asked Nick Holts ???? “ You should get it for £600 but if you bid £1100 it should be yours”. Well I won £1100 plus 25% buyers commission. Ulfere ( hal ) from Alabama on British military forums had one too and we became great friends, years went by then suddenly nothing, I miss him dearly.
Tears aside, I used an oil stone till every bit of rust was gone and the white paint scraped off. White pain was added to protect the wood on sailing ships off to India . I discovered it was after 1906 as it had an arm and sword proof mark ( possible not nitro but nitro for black ??? ). I popped into London to the London Proof House. They agreed it wise to nitro proof it but could find no data , later they thought it wise to black powder proof it , horrified it was stamped
“ not nitro “. But it was in my favour as now being BP no licences was needed in France , thinking hogs everywhere . Haha
Strangely, probably why it was not despatched as it had no sights , and I fitted different hammers Hal above , Enfield riffling 440g jacketed bullet and 140 g BP or 70g Varget take your pick. Type in utube 577-500 no 2 , guy firing my “ cannon”. Ha ha
After 14 years I got the flip sights fitted off. This tatty cape rifle , I made the rest of the sights as I said the rifle did not have any.
So the moral of this story is if you see a rusty gun don’t pass it by, look at it with love as it’s probably stood in a shed since 1880 unused and nobody has messed with it. Then makelove to it with tender care

I try my best, running out of time I’ll be 81 in three months, people dying around me, me taking drugs for cancer , but I should make 90 ha ha. But going and try for 120
You may have read I am doing up this 12b £170 at Holts auction cape rifle. Could not find perma blue for barrels and just ordered eBay 12 jan. Found a tube is best £12.50. So with 5 screws assembled it. Then started scraping stock. Needs to be assembled to make sure iron parts don’t end up above the wood. Very important. Then oh dear the epoxy did not hold the break in the stock, probably cheap epoxy on eBay, I’ll do it again with Araldite , should have used a wood glue, too late now . These things happen , but progressing well . Need to make nipples and ramrod now.
Along side, photo, is my .6”bore Reilly cape rifle , now good condition, it was covered in fine rust, my sort of gun. £860 at holts “in need of restoration “

Played hooky while out of town on a job and visited several gun stores trying to find Blackpowder Gold.
This one outdoor shop have a .50 TC Hawken on consignment for $800. I giggled and handed it back to the employee. He giggled with me. He knew.
No powder. No caps. 1 half decent lookin overpriced Hawken. Such is life.

I'll have to tell you later, I'm sitting in my truck waiting for the range to open. However, the forecast isn't holding, it's raining. Plan is to shoot my TVM .32 caplock.
My first attempt at a carved powder measure. Not the worst I've seen. I used tea to stain it and make the track pop after sanding it lightly.

The weather broke for me, I got to shoot. Tested various patch material wrapped around mostly .315 cast balls although I did try a few .319 cast balls. Nothing spectacular to report. I'm still working with this gun. It will shoot, now only if I could.

Are you sure you got the wood warm enough? It doesn't look done to me and still looks pretty green... Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but it doesn't look like you got a full blush from enough heat. (just be sure to be real careful at the corners...)
I made a new powder measure.
Powder measure finished and on my horn strap where it belongs. One of the great things about muzzleloading is making your own stuff even if it’s not professional.

Cast @120 .440 & .457 balls this afternoon. Out to the range tomorrow to shoot December postal match target.
Well I was thinking the same thing myself after looking at it this evening. I'll try and heat it up some more tomorrow. I got the wood pretty hot to the touch, but maybe not hot enough. I was a bit timid concerned about scorching the wood.

ample heat usually turns AF a rust color. depends on the type of wood.
