What is the groove called that is right below the patchbox?

You mean the moulding cut into the wood that runs on both sides from above the toe plate to the trigger guard?

In my vocabulary it's called a lower buttstock molding. An upper buttstock molding, usually an incised line running alongside both sides of the comb, can be found on some southern guns...Fred

Lower buttstock molding. It can be anything from a single insized line to a cove and bead like the most complex forestock molding.
