All of the colors of scotch-brite everyone always mentions are hard to find, at least also in my area-biggest 'big' city nearest is 25 miles away, only 30,000 population. I did find a single pad grey pad not long ago, can't recall where I bought it, but haven't seen any more around when checking all of the paint/finish dept's in stores. I bought it to give it a try, have never used it for rub between coats. Alot of the green stuff for scouring pans and thats it.

I like scotch brite for scrubbing my cast iron cooking equipment.

I was surprised to see Scotch-Brite White at the local Home Depot. White is equivalent to 0000 steel wool.

I no longer seek out specialized items for the hobby locally. None is to be had. None of the people in hardware stores know anything anymore. I skip it and buy most everything on line or make it myself.

Sandpaper is essentially a cutting tool and like all cutting tools some are made for different tasks than others. Sandpaper for metal sanding is closer grained than sandpaper for wood sanding. One type will usually work for either but not very well. A good open grained paperbacked sanding paper will make sanding wood a dream compared to the cloth backed closed grained product that works so well on metal. Folks use the wrong paper for the job and then complain that it sucks. Norton makes good quality sandpaper (Canadian) as does Klingspor (German). I used to get the bargain boxes from Klingspor. It's good stuff. The grit tends to run to the coarse side for what we do so I specified the finer grit. Whatever you do, avoid the Chinese paper from Harbor Freight, unless you want to find out the real meaning of "it sucks".

Finishing is 90% technique , and 10 % materials. One finisher can reach a finish he likes using one proceedure , while another guy can get to the same result through another different effort. Back in the 1970's , I loved John Bivins' bicentenial rifle finish , but even using his own finish materials , I couldn't make it work. However through , A few years of experimentation , I could make a rifle look like a bicentenial rifle finish , and amusingly , not with any of John Bivins' custom materials. 90% technique , 10% materials.

I swear, I don't know how I make grown men burst in to tears over how to make guns. You wouldn't think such delicate men would be able to function in society.
