I have a 10" or so piece of oak dowel that is 1" in dia. I use this for every bullet I cast. With my gloved hand, I push open the sprue plate. I then use the piece of oak and simply push on the corner of the mold as I open it. Most of the time doing that I do not have to tap on the mold handles.
