Do you remove the butt plate and stain/seal the end grain beneath it, or leave the butt plate on for the finishing process?

Remove butt plate for finishing?

I do, but others may differ. The butt will occasionally sit on the wet ground, at least my gun does. I do not want any moisture entering and swelling, or discoloring the stock .
I always sealed the butts first, especially on nailed-on trade gun butt plates.
