I know what the difference between the two cuts is, but whats the difference between the two when it somes to stock building? Can flatsawn timber be used?

why is it that certain gunsmiths only use quarter sawn? Does it have any advantages above flat?

I see. I take it that quarter sawn also has better matching sides? :hmm:

Quarter sawn was and still is prefered not only for the figure but also for the fact that wood expands and contracts with changes in humidity and temperature. Quartersawn wood's expansion is usually 1/2 that of flatsawn. The exact differnce depends on the species. I deal with this factor constantly since I do custom furniture building and allowing for wood movement is a must when dealing with native hardwoods.
