Perhaps because I did it wrong, I found spit incredibly hard to load the only time I tried it. I put the patch in my mouth while loading one, firing, then brushing the pan and measuring out the next load. It was a task ramming it down. Just my experience.

I prefer a little bit of mink oil. Basically just wipe it across the surface of it in the can a couple of times then work it in with my thumbs.

Caveat - I don't go for extreme accuracy or hunting, just acceptable 2" groups at 25yds, muzzle end bag supported. As such, ease of loading and cleaning is most important to me.
 
Oh yeah. Lots of variables, and the particular rifle I was using spit on can be hard to load with anything. Always good to try everything at least once!
 
I posted today's range pictures in a Renegade 54 thread I started in percussion rifles.
