I would agree it is a reproduction for all the reasons enumerated above. However, somebody did a mighty good job of defarbing and aging it.

Someone who wanted a Bess for shooting or living history could do a lot worse, especially with a starting bid of only $500.

I know zip about Besses, but if it was original, wouldn't it have British proof marks somewhere? Just for fun call and ask for a picture of the proofs. See what they answer.
