wonder what sort of equipment was taken on their trek for such work? They mention that a portion of the gunsmithing tools were cached prior to the above repair. And how common it was to restore an old barrel by recutting the grooves? Seems amazing that the L and C expedition was doing this in the field!

IIRC, the Bevel Bros did a great article on the LC barrel "freshening" in Muzzleblasts a year or so ago... I recall the article but not the date.
