Here in AZ they lock gates in the winter to keep people from driving in to remote places and getting stuck and dying. I always thought it would be cool to set up an “executive” personal biathlon coarse in the national forest. It would be a ton of work, but you could scout it in the summer and then backpack in when the snow pack was sufficient.

Probably too ambitious for me now, when I was a kid, x country was one of my favorite outdoor activities.
 
Yeah, they do here in MN.
Just like a Polar Bear Plunge does.
It only works where there's cold, snow and ice

Fantastic! It looks like there used to be one, with snowshoes, near me in Logan, Utah. Last year I can find was 2020. I'll have to inquire about it.
