I have a 54cal Plains Pistol. Just wondering if anyone else who has one if their's also shoots low. I use a 6 o'clock hold have tried numerous patch and ball combinations. .535 and .530 balls and various patches. Powder charge is 30gr of 3f Swiss. I have not tried more powder but maybe I need to.

Most fixed sight muzzleloaders come with a slightly taller front sight than needed. This makes them shoot low, but allows extra sight for you to file down and sight in with. Just take a file with you to the range and remove some of the front sight a little at a time until you get the point of impact as high as you need it.

Many pistol shooters have a tendency to let the muzzle dip when the pull the trigger, myself included. I would shoot it off the sandbags with the load you are most comfortable with and see where the gun shoots with a minimum of human effects. If it does indeed shoot low, filing the front sight is easy and will bring the point of impact up, if you discover it is right on the money, you know you need to work on your technique.

I probably should have mentioned that I have shot it off bags so minimal human intervention was involved with my shooting low finding. I also understand that I can file the front sight. However there isnt much of a front sight on those guns to file to begin with. I will probably just take a different hold. I was just curious if other Plains pistol owners had the same issue

On my Plains Pistol the front sight is filed down to a little less than 1/4" tall
