Dive very slowly.
If your going rifle, get a flintlock. Your first rifle might not be one, but your last one will be.
If you go cap guns, be prepared to make your on caps.

Thanks all for the warm welcome! And thanks, JT for the advice! I definitely would love a flintlock, and would be getting one regardless. For the caps, I notice that some online retailers seem to have them in stock for about 10 cents/cap. Is it more an issue of the supply being unreliable? I have to admit, I also have a hankering for a classic-style peppergun. I'm a sucker for weird arms. Might have to write up a "wanted" post in the trade forum, since they seem a little hard to find online.
