What do you mean by ‘restore’?
I make it look like it came from the factory.
Stock work is easy; I can fix stocks. I can even make new stocks.
Metal stuff is more difficult. I have a condition that makes it so I cant weld. But I can strip, fill, paint, shellac, blue... all that stuff.

All, how should the metal finish look?
Ive found several pics of this model firearm. On some, the metal is very shiny, on others, its more gunmetal grey. On some, its almost black. Whats the most appropriate finish for the metal on this firearm?
Thanks again for all of your knowledge, I appreciate it.

Might be wise to check and see if it is loaded first off, and go from there.
Do I have NEWS!!!
I think its loaded.
And there's a large crack on the barrel.

Use a ramrod or a stick to see if it's loaded.

Doesn't look loaded.

Looks like a rusty crusty breech plug face.

Hold the barrel 4 inches from the breech with the muzzle facing down. Thump it with your knuckle. If it goes THUD, it's cracked. If it rings like a bell, it's not cracked.

When I put the borescope down the barrel, light showed thru the crack.
Which was kinda cool/ terrifying. What if someone tried to shoot it?!?!
Thanks!

Restoration as described takes it out of the wall hanger category - I'd like it much better "as-is" for display. ( 'jes sayin' )

So... I love firearms. But I'm not very interested in shooting.
I just think they're beautiful.
So I buy old guns, and fix them, and hang them.
My children don't like guns, so they'll probably throw them away (honestly. My son said he'd toss them in the garbage) when I die.

I have more news!
I took it apart (mostly). There's a huge crack at the base of the barrel. Maybe 8 inches long.
A ball came out of the barrel. It feels like wood. Maybe fabric. Very light.
I enclosed a pic of the inside of the mechanical bits.
Thanks again!

That’s an Enfield lock and side plate. Can’t tell from the photos which pattern it may get be.
Hardley. its some US converted affair .Going by the hammer but the suggestion its continental could be the case . Rudyard

I agree Rudyard. I keyed in to shape of the bolster, which was wrong. And then confused the side plate with the 1816 Springfield that I'd been reading about. The old saying that a little bit of knowledge is a dangerous thing was well proven in my post.
That is true don't worry about it We all clang sometimes .
Regards Rudyard
