Can you upload a picture of the crown? Is the cross guard German silver?
 
I believe that he's referring to the burr.. or south end of the antler used for the handle. I too am curious, was it naturally shed, or sawn from the skull plate and polished?

That is the coronet which attaches the antler to the skull by a bone called the Pedicle , the length of the pedicle bone from the skull gets shorter each time antlers are cast and regrown ,so it is easy to judge the age of a stag or buck from a distance by looking at the length of the pedicle. If you can't see any pedicle it is an old animal .
