I am pondering the purchase of an Enfield Rifle Musket from James River Armory. Is the Skirmish Grade worth the extra $70 for the Hoyt barrel? Also, is the dovetailed front sight close to authentic? Any other thoughts on the subject would be appreciated. Thanks.

yes to the hoyt barrel. you can just about see the dovetail at least on my friends James river Richmond. Mine, my sons colt musket and my sons original CS Richmond Carbine that Bobby did a reline in all have a dovetail that Bobby did for us you can just about see it.
for got to ask are you going to shoot live rounds or plan on shooting comp w/ it? then yes
going to reinact then no on the $70.
The hoyt barrel makes it a shoots grade gun

I picked up the springfield model recently with the hoyt barrel and I'm very pleased with it. I now have a tight pattern at 50yds. The barrel is an obvious choice if you're into shooting it. Mine has a cleanout screw below the nipple which helps on cleaning which is a nice plus.

I would use this for live fire on my own and possibly getting into skirmishing and maybe reenacting.

Sounds like the Skirmish grade with the nicer barrel is the way to go. I just want to make sure that they are still plenty authentic looking.

I might have to look into the Parker-Hales. I don't think those are cheap either.

They're not not cheap, but they're worth the money. At least the English made ones are. Don't know about the Italian ones.
