How do I reverse the sins of the PO?

Just be really sure to think through the nipple & nipple seat situation...it's not worth having a nipple come unhinged and wind up in your your brainpan!
TC will install a new breechplug and reblue the whole thing for $85

Yeah, I had heard that. IIRC, the TC threads are standard while most of the others are a metric thread of some type or another. A local gun shop has a few TC nipples on the shelf. I figured I would pick one up later this week. After I scrub the evidence out of the barrel...

Well, the PO of this gun deserves to smoke a tur# in pergatory for this! It is a good thing that I have the T handle for the ramrod as I had to stand on it to pull the ramrod out - not once, but twice!! The amount of filth and rust that has come out of this barrel is terrific. The sad news is that the barrel is horribly pitted. I will try shooting it at some point after I find a nipple for it, but that day is long off....

If the bore is not completely gone, you could go with an oversize nipple. You would need to have the port machined for the new thread.

Track of the wolf sells .005-.035" oversize 1/4-28 nipples.
