...fairly shallow flash cup....

In fact they don't need to be nearly so long as they come from the factory. You can shorten them to your heart's content, and they don't have to be long at all to do the job of deflecting the flame and hot particles.

I use them on most rifles having bolsters rather than snails. I'm not so concerned about wood char as arm burn and holes in my clothes.

Howdy!
I put them on all my rifles that will accept them. Keeps the nipple area cleaner, thus much easier to clean. I guess they do keep sparks and such off me as well. (When I go out to shoot, 15-20 rounds is a common amount to shoot; leaves a lot of fouling.)
I like the idea about a piece of leather also being used. I have one rifle that could really use something to keep fouling off the stock and barrel, but the lock will not allow a flash cup. Going to have to give that leather trick a try!

I have one on a TC Hawken. It's made from small brass bell. Does keep a lot of cap debris off the breech and stock. No problem to cap the nipple, there is room. I have only the one rifle so equipped. I do keep an eye out for small bells, sometimes I spot one or more at garage sales, but they need to be the 'right' size, most are too large. Others, too small.

Just need to drill the hole in the top, and file to fit.

Pete
