Well I'm calling it done anyway. I'm not completely satisfied with all of the carving but it's mostly good. TOW did right by me with the wood grade but it's undoubtedly soft maple. It just doesn't clean up as well IMHO. I polished the barrel up and I'm going to leave it in the white, it looks better than I expected it to. Learned a couple of things along the way that should serve me well next time.

BTW, that Davis lock is a sparker! The mainspring is so strong I worry it's going to break though. Anybody have any experience with them one way or the other?

Looks like a professional job to me. A very nice looking rifle.

She's beautiful! :hatsoff:

The soft maple looks more like cherry to me, but I guess it's all in the finish.

Definitely a piece to be proud of!

Nice job!
What caliber did you go with? How does that Davis lock compare to a Siler?
I would like to use on of those in the future.

Great job.

How about a close-up of the sliding wooden patchbox?

A very solid looking rifle indeed.

It's a .62. The Davis lock is quite a bit bigger. Uses a bigger flint to. The mainspring is lots more powerful and it takes quite a bit more effort to pull the hammer back. Sure throws a shower of sparks though. We'll see just how well it shoots this weekend.

I think it is a great job, Congrats to you. better then my first one
I can tell from your tone that there are some things you don't like about it.
Maybe a few misstakes that only you can see???
Only one cure for that
Build another one..

Muskrat,

Those who have the capabilities to do a far better job than you have done may find fault with your work, but those of use who can't, say WOW. If I could produce anything as good as that after a 20 year layoff I be dang proud of myself.
