I had a little spare time here lately so i thought I'd make one of these. Its made from junk yard sheet copper and some wire. The hook is forged from a electric fence post. Seems to work OK on veg oil but i think animal fat oil will work better.

Had to look at this post twice. I misread and thought it said Fat Belly Lamp.

Skunkskinner,

What did you use for a wick??
Very nice job on the copper.
Have a nice Christmas.

Thanks Mike, i took the wick out of a kerosene lamp. You can buy replacements at wally world pretty cheap.

That is bueatiful,i love the old betty lamps, would sperm whale oil be better, can you still get it? Excuse my asking here, but do you sell these, would love to have one in my cave..I think i read somewhere about different styles of wicks also.My friend has an antique store and had one and didn't know what it was,i had done research on them and told him,i believe it ended up being worth a pretty penny,he had it on the counter and someone snagged it.
That is very nice!

Thanks Chief,

Sperm whale oil would probably be fantastic, i think its illegal to have now a days tho.

I do this stuff for fun, never thought abought selling them :hmm:

It is not illegal to have sperm whale oil. But it is illegal to sell any that cannot be documented to pre 1968. There was a case a couple of years back where a man found a gallon in a warehouse that had been used by a clock company long out of business, he advertised it on Ebay and paid a BIG fine. If you want to try how it would work the jabola bean oil is a very close imatation and available from Dixie gun works as synthetic sperm whale oil. I still have a few ounces of the origional left from the sixties and the synthetic is very close. :idunno:
