OK, this is a Euro Arms .58 cal. Carbine / Musketoon,
Euro Arms London Armory Carbine.
This is their model 1861 Artillery Carbine.
24"-inch barrel with bayonet lug on the right side at the muzzle.
Caliber: .58 / .577
Overall Length: 40 1/4"
Weight: 7lb 8 oz.
Stock: Seasoned Walnut with solid brass furniture.
Barrel: 5 grooves 1 in 48" twist
Sights: rear sight graduated to 600 yards, front sight fixed.
Serial number is 2741
Date Code - AD = 1978
The DGG is the mark of Armi San Paoli, now Euro Arms.

You have a very fine rifle (carbine) and will get excellent service from it for years to come. Years ago I ordered an US M1841 in the original .54 caliber from Euroarms. Fit/finish/quality are as good as most any custom rifle I've seen.
 
Oh, I notice (in the first photo) a line in the butt stock that kinda looks like a crack; what is it?
 
I always understood that “they”, eventually figured out that tompions did more harm than good. Of course, kept dirt and rain, etc. from the bore, but trended to promote rust through condensation in a near vacuum situation.
Correct, but it is a good accessory to have.
