Looking for a file purchase recommendation for draw filing tool marks from the octagon portion of the barrel. Manufacturer, size, etc. Also any tips for not putting flat parts on the wedding band. Thanks

When I draw file I start with a bastard file (course) then move down to a finish file before sanding. I pick up my files from Harbor Freight, they work as well as the expensive files. Never draw towards the wedding band always draw towards the tang and you shouldn't mess up the band.

That's what I thought. Video I'm watching the person is going towards the band resulting in flat scuffs. I have some harbor freight files I haven't used so wasn't sure of their quality.

The Number 1. File I have used since 1973 for modern and ML gun work is what Stanley originally designed as their 8" Handy File. Not sure if Stanley even makes it anymore, but Nicholson and Apex make the exact same file and they are easy to get at Home Depot, Lowe's, and other hardware stores. Below is the link I found the fastest to show the file I'm referring to:

https://www.amazon.com/Nicholson-06601-8-Inch-Handy-File/dp/B00002N7RN
I like this size as I can better "feel" where I want to put pressure on the file to get a truly flat surface for draw filing barrel flats and a whole host of other things. The double cut size is the rough size that does the most work and the smooth side gives you a fine finish.

I also use large Mill Files up to 18" long, when the surface is already smoother and to get a smooth/uniform surface over large areas.

Excellent...I'll purchase one of those. I just have to finish the Octagon portion of a barrel. Thanks
