Shot placement is King. Penetration is Queen. If you're comcerned about ft.lbs. of energy try a slug of some sort. I have never killed a bear with my .50 (actually never even had a shot at one) but have tryed some 'sabot' type pistol bullets in it. I used a hard-cast lead slug meant for a .45 long colt using the same powder charge as for a PRB, shot into sections of pine logs with a target nailed to it. I split the logs to check the damage done by the slug, quite a bit more than a RB, and more penetration.
